# Architecture Decision Record (ADR)

Version: 1.0

Project: Babees Place

---

# Purpose

This document records important architectural and engineering decisions made during the development of Babees Place.

The purpose is to explain **why** decisions were made so that future contributors and AI assistants understand the reasoning behind the architecture.

Architecture decisions should only change after careful review.

# ADR-001

## Title

Use React + Vite for the Frontend

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

The frontend is built using React with Vite.

### Reason

- Fast development server
- Excellent build performance
- Large ecosystem
- Easy deployment
- Modern tooling

---

# ADR-002

## Title

Use Tailwind CSS

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Tailwind CSS is the primary styling framework.

### Reason

- Utility-first approach
- Rapid UI development
- Consistent design
- Easy maintenance
- Small production bundle

---

# ADR-003

## Title

Use Supabase as the Backend

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Supabase replaces the traditional Express backend.

### Reason

- PostgreSQL database
- Built-in authentication
- Row Level Security
- Storage
- Realtime features
- Reduced infrastructure
- Faster development

### Consequences

Business logic should be implemented using:

- Database functions
- Edge Functions (when appropriate)
- Client services

---

# ADR-004

## Title

Single Repository Architecture

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Maintain one Git repository for the entire project.

### Reason

- Easier maintenance
- Simpler deployments
- Consistent versioning
- Better AI context
- Reduced complexity

---

# ADR-005

## Title

Security First Development

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Security always takes priority over development speed.

### Reason

Customer information must remain protected.

The application should be production-ready from the beginning.

### Rules

Never disable RLS.

Never expose secrets.

Never bypass authentication.

Never bypass authorization.

---

# ADR-006

## Title

Use Row Level Security

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Every application table must use Row Level Security.

### Reason

Authorization belongs in the database.

This prevents accidental data exposure.

---

# ADR-007

## Title

Use Role-Based Authorization

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Authorization is based on user roles.

Roles include:

- Customer
- Admin

### Reason

Provides clear separation between administrative and customer functionality.

---

# ADR-008

## Title

Documentation-Driven Development

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Major features require documentation updates.

### Reason

Documentation improves maintainability.

AI assistants rely on accurate documentation.

New contributors can understand the project quickly.

---

# ADR-009

## Title

Component-First Development

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Build reusable components before writing duplicate UI.

### Reason

Improves consistency.

Reduces maintenance.

Encourages reuse.

---

# ADR-010

## Title

Business Logic Separation

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Business logic should not live inside UI components.

### Reason

Improves readability.

Improves testing.

Improves maintainability.

---

# ADR-011

## Title

AI-Assisted Engineering

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

AI is used as an engineering assistant rather than an autonomous developer.

### Reason

Human review ensures quality and architectural consistency.

AI accelerates implementation and documentation while people make the final decisions.

### Responsibilities

AI should:

- Explain changes.
- Review security.
- Recommend improvements.
- Update documentation.
- Follow engineering standards.

AI should not:

- Make destructive changes without approval.
- Weaken security.
- Remove documentation.
- Introduce unnecessary complexity.

---

# ADR-012

## Title

Production-Ready Code Standard

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Features are only considered complete when they meet production standards.

### Definition of Done

- Feature works correctly.
- Security reviewed.
- RLS reviewed.
- Documentation updated.
- Build passes.
- Responsive.
- Accessible.
- Error handling implemented.
- Loading states implemented.
- No unnecessary code.

---

# ADR-013

## Title

Git Workflow

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Use small, focused commits.

### Rules

Commit often.

Use descriptive commit messages.

Never commit:

- node_modules
- dist
- .env
- temporary files

Review code before pushing.

---

# ADR-014

## Title

Folder Structure

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

The repository follows a predictable structure.

```text
babees_place/
│
├── frontend/
├── supabase/
├── docs/
├── scripts/
├── .github/
├── README.md
└── .gitignore
```

### Reason

Improves navigation.

Simplifies onboarding.

Makes AI assistance more accurate.

---

# ADR-015

## Title

Continuous Improvement

### Status

Accepted

### Decision

Every change should improve the project.

### Principle

Leave the codebase cleaner than you found it.

Reduce technical debt whenever practical.

Avoid quick fixes that create future problems.

---

# Future ADRs

Every significant architectural decision should be added here.

Examples:

- Introduce Redis caching.
- Add a recommendation engine.
- Introduce microservices.
- Replace Cloudinary.
- Add mobile applications.
- Add multi-vendor support.

Each new ADR should include:

- Title
- Status
- Decision
- Reason
- Consequences
